New York Marriage Licenses, 1860
Contributed by Robert H. Kelby, Librarian
New York Historical Society.
In 1860 the State of New York published
a volume containing a list of marriage licenses then on record
in the office of the Secretary of State, Albany. The licenses
were issued under the seal of the Prerogative Court, and acted
as a dispensation from the proclamation of banns, when it was
inconvenient or impossible to comply with the general usage. The
information given by the license, and unfortunately not printed
in the volume published by the State, consisted of the town of
residence and occupation of the parties to the marriage, and the
prospective bride was designated as Spinster or Widow as the
case might be. In the fire at the Capitol, March 29, 1911, a
number of the original manuscript volumes were saved, but all
badly burned. The following additions and corrections are from
432 original licenses, in the Archives of The New York
Historical Society. The pages numbers listed first refer to the
volume published by the State.
