Suffolk, County, N. Y. It comprehends
the east part of Long Island, with several considerable islands,
the largest of which are Shelter, Gardiner's, and Fisher's
islands. It contains 973 square miles Peconic River and some
small streams drain the county. The surface is broken and hilly;
soil, sand and sandy loam. There are extensive salt meadows. The
Long Island railroad is designed to extend to Greenport, in the
north east part of the county, and is progressing. Salt is
manufactured, by the evaporation of sea-water.
Capital, Riverhead. There were in 1840,
neat cattle 22,236, sheep 46,751, swine 20.534; wheat 105,778
bush, produced, rye 79,023, Indian corn 355,314, buckwheat
42,707, barley 9,460, oats 258,218, potatoes 170,236, hops 1,834
pounds; 188 stores, capitol $506,590; 23 lumber yards, capitol
$53,850; capitol invested in fisheries, $444,300; 5 fulling
mill, 8 woolen factory, 2 cotton factory, 1,032 sp., 16
tanneries, 2 potteries, 1 flouring mill, 51 grist mills, 17 saw
mills, 3 paper factories, 3 printing offices, 3 weekly, 1
semi-weekly newspapers. Capitol in manufac. $388,085. 6
academies 338 students, 164 schools 7,872 scholars. Population
32,469.
